Discovery and analysis of Teleios, a highly symmetric Galactic supernova remnant
A new, nearly perfectly circular supernova remnant named Teleios was discovered using ASKAP radio images, revealing unique properties unlike most known remnants. Its shape, faint radio brightness, and uncertain distance challenge clear classification and origin.
Why it matters: Teleios offers rare insight into supernova remnants with extreme symmetry and very low radio brightness.
The big picture: Its uncertain distance places it either as a young or old remnant, complicating the understanding of its evolutionary stage.
Stunning stat: Teleios spans 14 to 48 parsecs with a steep radio spectral index of -0.6 ± 0.3, among the faintest Galactic SNRs.
The stakes: No X-ray detection and ambiguous explosion type hinder confirming its nature, limiting insights into supernova diversity and evolution.
